What is Noun?

Noun means names that can be anyone’s name like any person, place, thing, animal, etc.

Person: John, Rahul, Trump, Obama, Julie, Bob, etc.
Place: Australia, India, London, Mumbai, New York, etc.
Thing: Car, Box, Pen, Book, etc.
Animals: Dog, Rabbit, Lion, Tiger, etc.

What is the name?

Names are used to identify someone. Everything in this world has a name, it can be either a person, animal, place, thing can be anything.

For example,

Person identifies by their proper names like- Rockey, Jackie, Anny, etc.

Animals identify by their class like- Lion, Tiger, Cat, Rat, etc.

Proper Noun

A proper noun is a name that identifies a particular person, place, or thing, etc. These are the actual proper names of person, place or thing, etc.

Some examples,

Any person’s name like- John, Mary, Bob, etc.

Any Place’s name like- London, Australia, Paris, Delhi, Africa, etc.

Anything’s name like- Parker pen, Pepsi, Coca Cola, etc.

The capital of India is Delhi.
My name is John Cena.
I was born in January.
I am going to London.

Common Noun

Common nouns are the class of persons, places, or things.

It’s a common name like- boy, girl, mobile, man, woman, toy, bag, city, etc. These are the common nouns.

Some Example,

Ex 1- Boy: Anmol, John, etc.

Here, Boy is a common noun because it is a class of boys.

Ex 2- Mobile: Samsung mobile, Nokia mobile, Vivo mobile

Here, Mobile is a common noun and all these mobile’s names are the proper noun.

Concrete Noun (Physical existence)

Any physical thing that exists in the world is concrete nouns. So concrete nouns are the things that physically exist.

Anything in this world that we can see, smell, touch, hear, and taste. If we can experience any one of these five senses then it physically exists in this world.

Some example-

Dog, Pen, Paper, Voice, Tears, Table, etc.

I have a pen.
Have you met John Cena?
I have a dog.

Abstract Noun (No Physical existence)

Those nouns that do not physically exist in the world are Abstract nouns.

In other words, Abstract nouns are those nouns that we can’t see, touch, hear, smell, or taste. These nouns refer to ideas, qualities, feelings/emotions, concepts, and conditions.

Some examples-

Love, Hate, Pain, Grief, Anger, Happiness, Sadness, Confusion, Time, Feelings, Expectation, Danger, Truth, Courage, Childhood, Democracy, Beliefs, Honesty, Patience, Trust, etc.

Childhood is the best time to build it.
Honesty depends mostly on truthfulness and integrity.
Their lives were full of sadness.

Countable Noun

Countable noun means that can be counted.

Examples: Pen, Pencil, Book, Man, City, Hair, Stars, Coin, etc.

We can count hairs like one, two, three hair.

Hair or stars are too many but still, we can count them like one star, two stars, three, four, five and so on.

I have only ten dollars.
I have too many books.
How many pens do you have?
She is a good girl/boy/man/woman.
I have a dog.

Uncountable Noun

Uncountable noun means that cannot be counted.

Examples: Honesty, Love, Hate, Milk, Water, Money, Furniture, Juice, etc.

Now some students will say money can be counted, but no. we can’t count money, why?

Have you ever said one money, two money, three money? We never say that, but we can say, one dollar, two dollars, three dollars, so the dollar is a countable noun but money is an uncountable noun.

I have a lot of money.
I need some drinking water.
Have some juice, please.
Do you need some gas for your car?
Do you want some milk?

Collective Noun

Collective nouns are those words that use as a group of persons, places, things, etc.

Example: People, Crowd, Team, Army, Class, etc.

People (a group of persons)
Crowd (a group of persons)
Team (a group of players)
Army (a group of soldiers)
Class (a group of students)

Some examples,

I love my family.
Indian army is a very powerful army.
A colony of ants.
An army of ants.
A library of books.
The herd of cows crossed the country road.
My younger brother got lost in the crowd of people.
The police are looking for a gang of thieves.

Compound Noun

A noun that is made with two or more than two words is called a compound noun.

Compound nouns can be [noun + noun], [adjective + noun], [verb + noun], [preposition + noun], [preposition + verb].

Example:

Bus stop, Textbook, Classroom, Seatbelt, Bedroom, Post office, Shoelace, Heartbeat, Basketball, Football, Sometimes, etc.

I want to play football.
My bedroom is nice.
He plays basketball.
Your sunglasses are red.
